Bridge in Assam to the nation. It is a historic occasion for many reasons. The Bogibeel Bridge project is very important for the nation for its strategic location. It is the gateway for the army to mobilise men and weaponry to sensitive Arunachal border from mainland. This bridge will facilitate the continuous communication of Assam with rest of the nation even the river Brahmaputra in the spate of floods. The Bogibeel Bridge

will connect Assam and the entire North-East region to the nation. This project will transform the narrative of the backward area.

They inaugurated the bridge on 94 birth anniversary of Atal Bihari Vajpayee celebrated as Good governance Day. The efforts of present state and central government need applause for the pursuance of the project and completing it in time after inordinate delays. NDA government must celebrate the building the Bogibeel Bridge because of initial design and execution of the bridge was their idea. The governments came in between only delayed the project. Looking back, Bogibeel project teaches us some lesions about How not to delay the projects?

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the building of the project in 2002 though the project sanctioned in 1997. However, later low priority and slow progress delayed the work. In 2007 the Bogibeel Project received the national status, and the progress gained speed with costs going up more than the three times. The work on the bridge of this nature is very challenging; work was possible only from the months of November to May because of a ferocious  Brahmaputra in the remaining period. The other uphill task was to transport the concrete across the river. They pumped concrete through pipes laid on buoys. The project used state of art welding technology and observed western welding standards in building the bridge. First time this structure constructed for the railways.

The length of the bridge is 4.95 Km with 39 spans of 125 metre each. It uses welded steel and concrete beam technology useful in the earthquake prone area. The stated life of the bridge is 120 years. This is the second largest bridge in the region on Brahmaputra. It carries double Broad Gauge line and three-lane highway on top. In an emergency a jet fighter can land on the highway. The bridge will link rail line between Rangia-Murkongselek section in north and Lumding- Dibrugarh section in south. Bogibeel has cut down the travel time between Tinsukiya and Naharlagun by ten hours.

Arunachal Pradesh became twenty-ninth state of India in1987. But china considers Arunachal as part of southern Tibet and for them it is a disputed territory. There had been many instances; the Chinese stance on Arunachal has brought embarrassment to India. In strategic and military point of view Arunachal is sensitive. In a likely China and India conflict Arunachal Border is a war theatre of major engagements. To strengthen of Arunachal Border is paramount for the army in the emergency. The Bogibeel Bridge, is an important addition to border infrastructure in this direction. Earlier crossing Brahmaputra between Dibrugarh and Dhemaji was the challenging task. Army used barges and rafts to cross the River. It consumed the lot of time and resources. The constructing of the Bogibeel Bridge has reduced all hardships for the Army by providing rail and road link via the bridge to Arunachal border. The structural design of the bridge is such that it can carry tanks and heavy armoured vehicles on the bridge. Apart from the swift movement of military and logistics supplies, it is now possible to mobilise the entire army from north east to Arunachal Border in no time. Therefore, in strategic parlance Bogibeel Bridge is of immense importance for India. The Army convoys now will cut down time by three to four hour in reaching to Arunachal Border.

Bogibeel Bridge by joining the north and south Assam will bring the north Assam to mainstream. The development and new avenues will open for the people. The north and south divide was visible in the life of Assam and north remained out of reach and backward. Also, bordering districts of Arunachal will benefit by the valuable connectivity to the rest of nation. Constructing Bogibeel Bridge was one statement of Assam accord agreed between government and the Student Union in 1985. It is ludicrous that fruits of development reached to the people after twenty-three years. Though it is better never than the late, authorities need to retrospect such inordinate delays. At the same time Modi government deserves congratulations for prioritising and completing a project of national importance in four years. He well deserves to inaugurate the bridge for meeting the commitment given to the backward region of the country.
