Bollywood is well known for making films related to diverse genres and interests. One such genre happens to be horror cinema. Although Bollywood is still not as advanced as Hollywood in terms of using good quality computer graphics as well as other special effects, there are certain filmmakers who had still managed to give the audiences goosebumps with their horror films.

Given below is a list of ten Bollywood films which every Indian horror film lover should watch at least once in a life time:

  1. Raat:

Raat happens to be a supernatural thriller film directed by Ram Gopal Varma which was released in the year 1992. It is considered to be one of the best horror cult classic films of all time. Actress Revathi rose to fame with this particular film because of her brilliant acting performance. The film manages to give the audiences the perfect goosebumps with its scary plot and characterisations.

The association of various creatures such as cats to evil entitites and ghosts is what makes the scary reinforcements more realistic. Although the film was released in the 90s with a very few special effects, it was still able to provide some genuine spooks to the movie lovers.

  1. Raaz:

If you are on a lookout for an erotic horror film, then Raaz is the best movie for you. Bollywood horror films are mostly ridiculed for having similar plots and characterisations, but Raaz stands out in the queue and is considered to be an excellent potboiler film even now. The film which was directed by Vikram Bhatt had an excellent storyline which included a creepy house, an evil spirit and some supernatural happenings which can definitely give you chilling spines during the night. And who else can forget Ashutosh Rana’s epic performance as the possessed guy in the film!

Released in the year 2002, Raaz still happens to be a standout performer in the genre of the best horror films in Bollywood.

  1. Darna Mana Hai:

This particular film which was released in the year 2003 can be definitely considered to be one of the scariest horror films made in Bollywood. Producer Ram Gopal Varma executed the perfect cast for the film which made it an instant hit without the use of any special effects or computer graphics. The common story of a group of friends sitting together and narrating spooky tales has been given a wonderful twist. The film consists of six stories which have been combined into a big story.

And who else can forget the amazing acting performances of veteran actors like Boman Irani, Saif Ali Khan and Rajpal Yadav!!

  1. Vaastu Shastra:

This one is another Ram Gopal Varma horror flick which was released in the year 2004. The film will scare the guts out of you with its amazing sound effects and cinematography. The very thought of a small child making imaginary friends in a lonely suburbian house is definitely an amazing spooky story to watch out for. Everyone is afraid of silence, blankness and empty haunted spaces and Vaastu Shastra is packed with all these scary stuff. So if you are the one who is having a faint heart, then this film is definitely going to make your spines chill at their worst.

  1. Bhool Bhulaiyaa:

Bored of watching the same old school type horror films? Then this film is definitely the one for you. Bhool Bhulaiyaa is an amazing combination of horror and comedy which can make roll out with laughter as well as scared at the same time. If you are a fan of Bhootiya mahals and haunted ancestral homes, then you must definitely watch this comedy horror flick.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa, which was released in the year 2007 is especially known for the amazing acting performance of Vidya Balan who plays the role of a possessed wife.

  1. 1920:

Most of the Bollywood horror films have one thing in common – a female ghost. Yes! As dumb as it might sound, this is a fact that even the filmmakers of Bollywood cannot deny. However, 1920, which was released in the year 2008, stands out in this particular line by having a male ghost entity. If you are a fan of the classic British era houses and ancestral buildings, then this film is the best one for you. 1920 can be considered as a genuinely scary and spooky film.

The very sight of a possessed woman climbing the walls and jumping off cliffs can make you tremble out in terror!

  1. 13B – Fear has a new address:

Most of us have the notion that the number 13 is an unlucky number and that we should avoid it to our best. 13B – Fear has a new address which was released in the year 2009, too talks about some similar horror experiences with the number 13. Although the storyline of the film is not so strong, but its picturisation is what does all the magic and makes you spill your popcorns while watching the film.

Imagine you are watching something on television in the midnight and suddenly the characters inside the TV start communicating with you! Do watch this movie to get the thrill of a perfect terror.

  1. Haunted – 3D:

If you are fond of watching 3D movies, then you must definitely watch this 2011 horror flick. This Vikram Bhatt directorial movie happens to be the first stereoscopic 3D horror film made in India. This film too breaks the stereotypes of always having a female ghost in the plot and instead has a revengeful male ghost as the antagonist.

Moreover, the amazing special effects and picturisation of the film add to its realistic storyline which makes it more scrary to watch. In fact, there are certain scenes in the film which can literally make you jump and shout in fear!

  1. Ek Thi Daayan:

This 2013 horror thriller is considered to be one of the best supernatural Bollywood films of all times. The very name of Daayan and Chudail can make a chill run down our spines and this film is the perfect dose of goosebumps for all the horror movie lovers. The dark and spooky picturisation including the amazing sound effects add to the effectiveness of the film.

Moreover, the catchy storyline of the film is definitely something that you may like while watching it. Unlike other Hindi horror films, Ek Thi Daayan does not have any common spooky haveli, female ghost or running child ghosts lurking aroung. The film, in fact, provides a realistic experience of fear with its amazing characterisations.

  1. Pizza:

Although the name of this 2014 supernatural film might not get you attracted to watch it in the first run, but once you sit down to watch the film, you will definitely get the scary and spooky experience which you were looking out for. Imagine and feel the horror of getting trapped inside a haunted house where all the ghostly spirits keep lurking around you!

Pizza has an amazing storyline with a wonderful twist in the end which you will get to know once you watch the movie. Enjoy!
